Not many surprises last night some good high scoring games from Slovakia and France. Scotland had a good win 3 - 1 vs Ukraine. Who are surprisinly at the top of their group when they are up against teams like France and Italy.

Watched the England game at home this afternoon. I thought Steve Maclaren made a good team selection. The team selections were:

England: Robinson, Richards, Campbell, Ferdinand (Lescott 46), Ashley Cole (Neville 49), Wright-Phillips, Gerrard, Barry, Joe Cole, Rooney, Owen (Lampard 70).
Subs Not Used: James, Bentley, Crouch, Defoe.

Estonia: Poom, Kruglov, Stepanov, Piiroja, Jaager, Rahn, Klavan, Dmitrijev, Lindpere, Kink (Viikmae 62), Saag.
Subs Not Used: Aksalu, Allas, Reim, Rooba, Barengrub, Terehhov.

England started with a great determination to score and got off to a great start from Shaun Wright-Phillips who nutmegged goal keeper Poom. I think there was a great partnership from Wright-Phillips and Richards they really played well together interlinking passes. And also as a whole England played very well and had good movement. I think I seen at one point during the game England had 70% possession and were in complete control of the game.

The second goal came from wonder kid Wayne Rooney with a cross from Joe Cole. Michael Own had some good awareness and left the ball for Rooney to put it away. That was the end of Rooney’s 2 year international goal drought. I think it was Alan Shearer who said after the match if you keep playing a player of Rooney’s quality it won’t be long until he scores. He played really well in my eyes and had a point to prove by scoring. He was running about the entire pitch and getting back when needed. He deserved his goal.

The third goal came from Rahn of Estonia with a cracking header to make it an own goal!!! That was hilarious shortly after Rooney had just scored. There was also a shot of one of the Estonian players taking a free kick like he was a rugby player which was also a bit of a laugh.

The use of the partnerships made the England team balanced them and I don’t think there is any need to change the team other than when John Terry for Sol Campbell when he is back from injury. The Barry, Garrard partnership really worked well and I think Barry deserved the man of the match.

There was an injury of A.Cole during the match which I think will make him miss the next game on Wednesday and I think the obvious replacement would be P.Neville.

The second half of the game was flat and boring I think England knew they had won the game and let their foot off the gas. But despite this the first half made this great viewing.

I think keeping F.Lampard on the bench for the majority of game was a good decision from Steve Maclaren because I don’t think Gerrard and Lampard work well together at all and often Lampard does not perform for England like he does for Chelsea.

There was talk after the match of Maclaren changing the formation to 433 I don’t why he would do this because the England team has been performing well with the 442. Great game to watch (at least the first half) and looking forward to watching the England Vs Russia game on Wednesday!
